In a classic retelling of North vs. South, Annette O’Hare spun a memorable love story. In her first full-length novel, Annette gives us a peek into her vivid story world. We are carried into the dramatic aftermath of the Civil War and come to understand the pain associated with those who survived the war. She gives us hope and one of the best love stories I’ve read in a while.
I enjoyed how slowly the relationship developed. Annette didn’t rush the romance but allowed it mature over the chapters. A friendship turned to love in the most natural way. Margaret and Thomas sought God’s will and desired to please Him above their own wants. A perfect example of keeping God first in our lives.
One of my favorite characters was June, Margaret’s little sister. To be honest, her charming personality stole my heart. She made me smile and laugh through most of the book. I admire Annette’s ability to write humor and children. Even after finishing the book I still think about June and smile.
If you prefer historical novels or a good love story, then I encourage you to read Northern Light. It won’t disappoint!

I can’t possibly name a favorite author as I have way too many! But I can name the author who first introduced me to Regency historical fiction and that is Julie Klassen. I’ve read all but one of her books (Lady Maybe), she knows how to tell a story that’s engaging, vivid and lifelike. I can imagine living in those days just by her writing! I love a variety of genres from historical to suspense and anywhere in between. As long as it’s Christian fiction, I’ll read it!
