Sent away for protection, hotel heiress Estella Everstone finds herself living undercover as a lady’s companion named Elle Stoneburner at one of her father’s opulent hotels in the mountains of Maine—the one she’d always loved best and always hoped to own one day, Everston. The one thing she doesn’t like about the situation is that her ex-fiancé is in the area and is set on marrying someone else. Reeling from her feelings of being unwanted and unworthy, Estella reluctantly forms a friendship with the gruff manager of Everston, Dexter Blakeley, who seems to have something against wealthy young socialites with too much money, although they are just the kind of people Everston caters to.
When Estella finds herself in need of help, Dexter comes to the rescue with an offer she can’t refuse. She sees no other choice aside from going back home to her family and accepts the position as companion to his sister. Throughout her interactions with Dexter, she can’t deny the pull that’s evidenced between them every time he comes near. Estella realizes that while she’s been hiding behind a false name and identity, she’s never been freer to be herself than when she’s with Dexter Blakeley. But will he still love her when he finds out she’s Estella Everstone? She’s not entirely sure.

What made The Captive Imposter a good read?
The love story was sigh worthy! In fact, I read where Dawn compared the hero Dexter Blakeley to John Thorton from North & South. This was a perfect comparison. Dexter is the sort of man who prefers his own company or that of his small family. He doesn’t trust many people or hold them in high confidence, that means his good opinion once attained is a huge victory. Hotel heiress Estella Everstone, hiding under the alias of Elle Stoneburner, senses this truth about him and finds that she doesn’t want Dexter to find out she has been lying to him. Especially given his strong dislike for her true family.
One of the things that I enjoy about these books are the way the character slowly fall in love. Dawn never has them fall in love overnight. She weaves a story of hardship and friendship based on their relationship with God. I love the message that gives the reader.
There were several parts where I found myself laughing and thinking about the book long after I set it down. Mrs. Granston was a fun character. She was perfectly written as the widow that Elle’s the companion to at the start of the book. I think Dawn has a true gift for picking character names. She always picks names that describe the characters so perfectly.
The story has enough romantic suspense to keep the reader turning pages way past their bedtime. I know I read it in a day or two and then regretted that I finished it so quickly. Hopefully, Dawn won’t make us wait too long for the next book in the Everstone family series.
